David Carfagno, D.O.
David Carfagno, D.O. is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine (CAQ) having completed his internship and residency and fellowship at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Carfagno currently serves as a medical director for Ironman Arizona and Valley of the Sun Half Marathon. He also serves as the medical director for the Special Olympics of Arizona He is co-founder of OnSite Sports Medicine, a non-profit charitable sports medicine group that covers sporting events in the valley. He is a medical consultant for the Chinese National Baseball Team and United States Inline Skating. On a local level, he serves as a team physician for several local area high schools.
He has served as a medical consultant for United States Baseball, Milwaukee Brewers Baseball, ATP/WTA Professional Tennis, Arizona Fall League Baseball, and recently was an invited physician at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There he worked with US Wrestling, US WaterPolo, and US Speed Skating.
Dr. Carfagno is a published author and featured speaker on a variety of sports medicine topics including Concussions, Athletes with Arthritis, Steroids in sport, and sports supplementation.

Luke Knowlton, B.S., ACSM

Luke Knowlton, B.S., ACSM is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health/Fitness Instructor and has been a practicing Personal Trainer since 2003. After graduating from Greenville High School in Greenville, Maine, he attended Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. At Springfield, Luke earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Exercise Science with a Health Studies minor and Magna Cum laude honor.
Luke was involved with three exercise internships/practicum experiences at Springfield College, including one that brought him across the world to Wollongong, Australia and a final fieldwork experience with Dr. Carfagno at Scottsdale Sports Medicine Institute. Since 2005, Luke’s specialization at SSMI has included the research and testing of metabolic substrate utilization, as well as the development of individualized performance enhancement programs in individuals of every fitness level from Olympic athletes to sendentary clients. Luke’s recent focus has been the overview and guidance of one of the most comprehensive and successful weight loss and weight gain programs in Arizona. In his spare time, Luke enjoys soccer, weight training, marathon running, hiking, surfing, water-sports and world travel.

Brittany Zaharopoulos
Brittany Zaharopoulos is certified by the American Dietetic Association as a Registered Dietitian. Brittany received her Bachelor’s degree in dietetics from The Ohio State University. She received internship training at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She trained in various fields including; diabetes counseling, nutrition education in schools, consulting with AIDS and cancer patients in an outpatient setting, and clinical training in the hospital setting. She passed the Registered Dietetics Exam in December of 2006 and began working at Life Time Fitness shortly after.
At Life Time Fitness she performed metabolic testing, taught a Team Weight Loss and Team Fitness series of classes, performed one-on-one nutrition counseling, taught nutrition seminars, and sent monthly newsletters. She received her Adult Weight Management Certification in September of 2007. She is passionate about helping her clients meet their health and fitness goals. She believes in a balance between mind, body, and soul as the best approach to a healthy way of life. She will be providing nutrition consultations for patients at Scottsdale Sports Medicine Institute. In her spare time, she enjoys training for marathons, playing tennis, reading, and hiking.
